Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to challenge particular calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
